this section that water had shown up in tests. the key to fighting this corrosion apparently using chemicals or robots to scrape microbes away but apparently pg&e says the pipeline in san bruno was too narrow and had too many bends for some of the recommended treatments. pg&e said it did use ultrasonic techniques to detect corrosion and didn't find any. meanwhile, the public utilities commission has voted to bring an independent panel in to investigation this explosion, looking into what pg&e and state agencies could have done to avoid the disaster. state leaders are pushing to make sure pg&e pays for the cost of the panel out of its own profits so customers do not have to foot the bill. today is day 2 of heavy demolition an clean-up in the neighborhood what remains of the 35 homes that were burned to the ground will be removed over the next several weeks. large excavators and workers in protective gear are working on three homes a day. at the same time, street sweepers and water trucks work to keep the area clean by reducing the threat of toxic dust. >> want to make sure that we're very and

--bottle of depleted your uranium. rittenhouse worked at goodrich in fairfield. the company does not use uranium. he will be arraigned today on charges positive sessing explosives. >>> this morning, two bodies still in the small plane that crashed on the peninsula. that plane taking off from the san carlos airport about noon yesterday. a few minutes later, it crashed into a lagoon at redwood shores. some boaters in the area quickly got to the crash scene but couldn't rescue anyone from the plane. emergency personnel recovered a woman's body from the water, but two people still in the cockpit will not be removed until investigators check the wreckage. >> one of the bodies in the plane is believed to be that of the owner. he is 92-year-old robert borrmann, who owns a steel company in east palo alto. the pilot was also killed. witnesses say he was a hero for steering the plane away from buildings near the crash site. >>> the city of san carlos may soon have no police department. last night the city council voted to disband the department and contract services out to the san mateo county she

to be trying to find the cause for months before it's actually confirmed. but they say that they will let us know as soon as new information comes in on exactly what caused this pipeline explosion. here in san bruno, the investigation continues this morning. thousands of miles of pipeline will have to be inspected by pg&e as this investigation, of course, continues. the ntsb has been collecting evidence from around the blast site, pieces of the pipeline exploded on thursday leaving this crater in the ground in the middle of a neighborhood. the ruptured line was in a high concentration area so it should -- high consequence area, so it should get more stringent inspections. pg&e says the line was slated to be replaced according to documents. now, pieces of it have become evidence instead, including a 28-foot section ripped out of the ground and tossed 100 feet into the air by the blast. it's being shipped to washington, d.c. as part of the investigation. another big part of the investigation, whether or not there was a gas smell reported to pg&e in the days before the explosion. >> we are not
